Bredagh 3rds beat league leaders Downpatrick

Last Sunday evening at Cherryvale, Bredagh 3rds put in a fine performance to overcome league leaders Downpatrick.
In a very evenly contested opening period there was very little between the sides which was reflected on the scoreboard at the short whistle – Bredagh 2-02 Downpatrick 1-04. Two goals for the hard-working Bredagh full-forward and captain Conor Owens, a point from play from Joe Steele and pointed free from Jack Holywood gave the home team the narrowest of leads at the break.

The second half continued in a similar fashion to the first period with both teams working hard all over the pitch. Bredagh’s full-back line of Ruairi Muldoon and Eunan Donnelly were exceptional and Paddy Gillen did a fine job in nets. After an early well taken point by Ben Scullion, Breadgh hit a purple patch in the middle of the half scoring 2-02 in succession. Jack Holywood caused the Downpatrick defence all sorts of problems, firstly raising the green flag for a well taken goal from play, then rippling the net from the penalty spot after the menacing Hugh Daly was dragged to the ground in the large rectangle. Well taken points by Conal O’Rawe and Ben Scullion left the home team with a 7 point lead going into the final 10 minutes. Downpatrick to their credit didn’t give up, they pushed hard to get back on level terms. It wasn’t long before they did so, scoring 2-01 to level matters heading into the closing phase of the game. Bredagh still looked to have plenty in the tank with plenty of fresh legs along the line and it was probably this depth that got them over the line in the end. Stephen Doherty scored a nice goal which was cancelled out when Downpatrick quickly went up the field and hit the back of the net themselves. With little time left on the clock it took a good score from sharp shooter Jamie McCarten to get the home lads over the line to an enjoyable victory

Good effort by all players involved, well done! Training Thursday night at 7.30pm in Cherryvale
