Bredagh senior footballers march on!

Bredagh 2-15 v Newry Shamrocks 0-11

Bredagh seniors kept their impressive vein of form going with 10 points to spare over Newry Shamrocks at Cherryvale on Thursday evening.

The away team went into the lead on 4 minutes through full forward Nathan Murphy, Bredagh free kick taker extraordinaire Donal Hughes fired over three successive frees before the lively Jody McGovern responded with a point in the 11th minute.
Bredagh were dominating play all over the field and that man Hughes rattled over another four points, two from play and two frees to leave it 0-7 to 0-2. Shamrocks half back Ciaran Coffey raised the white flag in the 20th minute and Hughes replied with a point from play, Jody McGovern responded with a score for the Newry men in the 23rd minute to leave a four point gap (0-08 to 0-04)

In the 24th minute Harps full back Deckie O’Hara made one of his trade mark gallops up the field, fed Niall Mullholland who then hit a delicious pass to full forward Donal Hughes, who then off loaded to O’Hara and the full back was coolness personified as he slotted the ball past net minder Jack Heaney. Newry Shamrocks didn’t give up and Nathan Murphy and Damien McKeown both pointed with 5 minutes to go until the break (1-08 to -0-06).

Donal Hughes got his ninth point of the half and the tough tackling midfielder John McKenna pointed on 31 minutes to send Bredagh into a seven point lead at the interval (1-10 to 0-06).

Bredagh started the second half on the attack and corner forward Bryan Rice expertly dispatched a low hard shot goal past Heaney to all but end any revival attempts by the Shamrocks (2-10 to 0-6). Jody McGovern notched over a free on 33 minutes and Hughes and Shields pointed for the home team and the Shamrocks pointed in the 40th minute.
Donal Hughes hit over his eleventh score of the game (6 frees) in the 44th minute and that man McGovern got another two points for the Newry men. Bredagh responded with two points form Niall Mullholland (53rd minute) and Joe Shields (54th minute). Nathan Murphy got the final score of the game before referee Damien Laverty blew matters to an end with Bredagh comfortable winners 2-15 to 0-11.

Well done to County Minor Brendan Gallen starting at wing half forward and making a fine senior debut and good to see Jack Holywood and Matthew Holywood both making substitute appearances after their recent injuries.

A well deserved break for the team now over the 12th holidays and Bredagh’s next game is away to Liatroim on Friday 21st July at 7.30pm.
