Warrenpoint 2-17 Bredagh 4-9
Bredagh senior reserve hurlers sponsored by BFit Belfast made the long journey to Warrenpoint on Saturday evening and were unlucky not to come away with at least a draw in a close, exciting encounter. The visitors got off to the best possible start with 2 goals in the first 3 minutes the first from a Ryan Curran free and the second a neat strike from Niall Irwin. The home side settled and began striking over a series of points from play and from their very arcuate free taker. When they found the Bredagh net for a goal it left them 3 ahead at the break. In the second half both teams fought hard for the win. Kealan Power buried a great goal to see Bredagh level the scores. Warrenpoint however edged 2 ahead and then disaster as they scored a fortuitous goal stretching the lead to 5.
The Bredagh heads did not drop and they put in an excellent final 10 minutes hurling. Kealan Power was dragged down when through on goal but Michael Napier’s well struck penalty was saved. Minutes later another free and this time Tiarnan Sheehan smashed the sliothar to the net off the underside of the crossbar. Warrenpoint defended brilliantly in the last couple of minutes to hold on for a 2 point win. It was a fabulous effort from the entire Bredagh team who played 3/4 of the game with only 14 men as star midfielder Niall Irwin was sent to the line after receiving 2 very dubious yellow cards. A disappointing result but the boys put in a great shift and can be proud of their effort.
